Think of the roll-ons and aerosol sprays you’d pick from the supermarket: many of these are antiperspirant deodorants.
Their job is to stop you from sweating. Some antiperspirants use aluminium salts to do this, which dissolve into your skin and form a coating that “plugs” part of your sweat glands.¹
There has been debate in the past as to whether these aluminium salts can be harmful to our bodies, but they’re currently considered safe in certain amounts.¹ Still, some people prefer to avoid them, since sweat is our body’s natural way of regulating our temperature.
Sweat itself doesn’t smell, it’s the bacteria that gather on it that cause body odour.
Natural deodorants aren’t antiperspirants. Instead, they use ingredients that help prevent odour while still letting your body sweat when it needs to.
You won’t find the aerosol sprays you’re used to, but there are non-aerosol mist sprays and roll-ons to help you stay fresh.
Other types, like sticks, balms, and creams, are also available.
Chances are you’ve stuck with your favourite antiperspirant for years. So it can be daunting to make the switch!
